Olhão Watercolour Intensive

Five immersive days of watercolour technique with Daniel López Villacañas in the harbour town of Olhão.

Five days. Full immersion. Paint on the table, sun on the skin, colour in the air.

For Daniel López, painting begins with a simple question: How do we discover the unusual in everyday life? A weathered window. A cardboard box. Rain marks on a wall. What seems ordinary reveals character, memory, atmosphere — and that is where our journey begins.

23-27 May 2026, 10:00–17:00

What We’ll Explore:

We will observe Daniel paint live, experiencing his workflow from first washes to bold decisions, corrections, and expressive mark-making. This is technical immersion and artistic inspiration in real time.

From focused studio sessions, we move into the streets of Olhão — past the iconic Mercados de Olhão, along the harbour walls, through the traces of fishermen’s life and the faded geometry of former sardine factories. Tiles, boats, ropes, shadows — texture everywhere.

One day will be dedicated to painting on a nearby island — Ilha da Armona, Ilha da Culatra or Ilha do Farol — directly inside the Atlantic light. Horizon, wind, and sand in the palette 😉

This is not a holiday workshop.
It is an immersion — and a journey:

  • through a historic harbour town
  • through light, texture, and atmosphere
  • and through your own way of observing the world

We will work seriously.
We will experiment.
We will push technique further.

Expect not just a technical workshop — but an artistic adventure!

Mercados de Olhão
Built in 1912–1916 on the waterfront, the iconic red-brick market halls were designed by the architect João de Moura Coutinho. Today they remain one of the most recognisable landmarks of the Algarve and the vibrant heart of Olhão’s daily life.
Sunset over Olhão
From above, Olhão reveals its distinctive skyline of white, flat-roofed houses — a legacy of North African influence that gives the town its quiet reputation as the “cubist town” of the Algarve, glowing softly in the evening light.

Through my art, I strive to reveal the hidden beauty in everyday scenes, celebrating the interplay of history, time, and transformation.

Join me on this journey of discovery, where every brushstroke tells a story, and every drop of rain leaves its mark.
