How I paint in watercolor

Painting of Teatro Lethes in Faro, showing its elegant neoclassical façade.

Watercolor is an unforgiving medium: it demands full attention and presence—and that’s exactly what I love about it. Most studies are finished within 30 to 45 minutes.
Painting water by using this brilliant color – Cobalt Turqoise Light – such a pleasure!

I usually get up very early and try to be on location by 7 a.m.—I love and deeply value the morning light. Painting en plein air in the Algarve during summer is simply fantastic, and watercolor is the perfect medium for it. I almost always build up my images in layers—and here, they dry within seconds. To work wet-in-wet (especially for soft, blurry details in shadow areas), I need to spray the paper frequently.

Painting of a colorful peacock standing in a sun-dappled garden path.

Of course, it’s essential to find a shady spot—otherwise, you’re completely blinded by the rising sun. I love starting with a first wash using my big 4-inch flat brush (as seen in the picture). I often continue shaping the composition with it—it’s fantastic for blocking in architectural forms and building clear geometric structures.
